Skin screening and your duty of care

Providing skin screening, especially for employees who work outdoors and are at greater risk of sun exposure as part of their work, helps reduce the risk to your organisation. In line with your ‘Duty of Care’ under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, you have likely identified the need for a skin screening program and skin cancer education.

As an employer it is important to know that each of your employees will receive the following as part of their skin check:

  1. full body assessmentskin screening perth
  2. personal advice on their skin type
  3. personal sun safety information and skin cancer education, including working safely outdoors.

Skin Cancer Screening report

As the Employer, you will receive a detailed Skin Cancer Screening report outlining:

  • demographics
  • employee compliance with sun safety measures and PPE
  • the number of employees that have been referred and the severity of lesions found.

For confidentiality, no names will be used in the report.

The Skin Cancer Screening Report is to help you, the employer, support your employees through education and awareness. It is a display of your Duty of Care,  and can also provide a measure for this type of health promotion initiative. Outdoor workers should be taught to regularly look at their skin for suspicious spots. It is important that they know what their skin looks like normally so changes will be noticed. See more in the Skin Cancer and Outdoor Work – a Guide for Employers

What if a suspicious spot is found?

During the onsite skin check if a lesion is found on an individual’s skin that requires referral, we will give the individual a time frame (based on severity of the lesion) in which they should see their Dr or specialist After that time frame expires our Nurse will follow up to make sure they have actioned the follow-up referral.

Each individual also receives an email with any pictures that were taken during the screening appointment.

Skin screening equipment

Our screening practitioners are all accredited with the Certificate of Dermoscopy.  This enable them to expertly use a Dermatoscope and Dermoscopic Camera.  As needed, they are able to upload digital images of suspicious lesions, and use specialist software to help identify if a mole or spot is harmless or at risk of being cancerous.

It is important to note that as this service is provided by Registered Nurses, they will not and legally cannot provide a diagnosis.  Importantly we will refer individuals with suspicious spots to a doctor who can make a diagnosis and begin management if required.

A personal skin screening story

One of our Skin Screening experts, has 10 years experience in workplace health and safety.  Her passion for early detection of Skin Cancer was further fueled by her own experience 2 years ago when she detected a Melanoma on her own back. Luckily it was early days and was categorised as Stage 0.

Our skin screening nurse trained with the Skin Cancer College of Australia and completed her Certificate of Dermoscopy.  She had been working in the area of Corporate Skin Cancer Screenings in WA for 2 years before she detected her own melanoma. If she hadn’t been working in the area it may have been a different outcome. Since then she has been on a mission to help with early detection of skin cancer. She has inspired the growth of our skin screening services in WA. We are lucky to have her….you will benefit from her experience, expertise and fantastic education.

Skin screening around Perth

We visit work sites, project camps, maintenance depots, workshops or offices around Perth, or on a FIFO basis around WA. In some cases, planning your skin screening in Perth to coincide with team meetings, conferences or workshops presents an ideal opportunity to pull together employees who work on the road or are more geographically dispersed.

Due to Melanoma being “Australia’s Cancer”, employee skin screening or workplace skin checks have become an important and popular Health and Wellbeing initiative for small and large organisations. Outdoor workers are at increased risk from skin cancer and sun damage to the eyes because they often spend long periods of time working outdoors. This is especially true for workers in Perth and WA.

Did you know that melanoma of the skin is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in males (after prostate and bowel cancer) and females (after breast and bowel cancer) in Australia. In 2016, there was an estimated 13,280 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in Australia, killing approximately 1,770 people.

In 2018, a world-first study led by University of Sydney found that Australians aged 18-40 years who were regular users of sunscreen in childhood reduced their risk of developing melanoma by 40 percent, compared to those who rarely used sunscreen.

Melanoma is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men aged 25-49 years and second most common cancer in women aged 25-49 years, after breast cancer. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma or other types of skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old.

Cancer Council Australia have put together an excellent guide to Understanding Skin Cancer. This can be a useful resource for your Heath and Wellbeing tool kit.
